Connecting Theory & Practice Week 4
We learn that by providing UDL principles and practices, we provide students more of an equal opportunity to succeed. In the UDL classroom, materials are presented in an array of ways and accomodations are provided for all students (not just students on 504s or IEPs). In a classroom that follows UDL principles we see graphics, organizers, visuals, etc. In the science classroom I observed this past week, students did an online experiment on magnents. Through this online platform we could see UDL practices being incorporated. Alongside the online platform and experiment students were able to complete a hands-on experiment. While working hands-on, students were able to hover words to see what the words meant. This provides a universal accomodation for all students. The addition of visuals also provides a universal accomodation for all students to utilize.
Words can be hovered and a definition can be spoken and/or read. Steps are also listed very clearly for students to follow.
Following this virtual and hands-on experiment, students were asked to show their understanding in ways that they were comfortable with. This also follows along with UDL practices. Students were first asked to play online games on Legends on Learning. This "gamified" their understanding. After, the teacher asked for students to show their understanding on magnentic forces by showing a hands-on demonstration, a poster, or a powerpoint. This UDL principal is strategic when allowing students to express what they know.
Following the demonstration, poster, or powerpoint, students did a quiz as an exit ticket. This is an example of the questions that were asked.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles stand as a critical framework for enhancing student engagement and fostering success in the educational setting. UDL recognizes the inherent variability in learners' needs, preferences, and abilities. By providing multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement, UDL accommodates a wide spectrum of learning styles, ensuring that every student can access and connect with the educational content. UDL plays a pivotal role in dismantling traditional barriers to learning. By offering flexibility and options in how information is presented and assessed, UDL levels the playing field for students with diverse backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities. This inclusivity not only promotes equity but also empowers students to showcase their strengths and capabilities, contributing to a positive and constructive learning environment. When learners find the educational experience engaging and personally meaningful, they are more likely to invest time and effort in their studies. By incorporating varied instructional methods, multimedia resources, and interactive learning opportunities, UDL captures students' interest, making the learning journey more dynamic and enjoyable.

Thanks for sharing your lesson and applying the ideas of UDL from the week's content focus. Well done!
